“I don't know what to do with my life”: how to deal with this feeling
Society, and social media in particular, often gives us the impression that everyone is happy and in step with their expectations and reality.
As a result, a false idea takes hold: that anyone who hesitates over which career to pursue, whether to change jobs, which university course to choose or whether to stay in a relationship must be lost.
Real life isn't quite like that.
Hesitation is the foundation of human life. And there is nothing wrong with that. We have created the myth that the “right” thing is always to know which path you want to take. In truth, feeling confused is entirely normal and, very often, even to be expected.
After all, who said that being healthy means always being so certain about life?
Take, for example, starting a job at a company because of the salary. Before long, we realise that even with money landing in our account every month, we are not happy with the situation. And then the question may arise: what am I doing with my life?
The answer may sound like a cliché, but once you take it to heart you will see how much sense it makes: we need to accept that life is ever-changing. And the sooner we embrace this, the lighter the journey will be.
We need to accept that our interests change. That earning a lot of money doesn't always make sense. That a particular job no longer suits who you are today. That a profession has “run its course” for you. That our feelings for a long-term partner have changed. And that's all right.
We need to accept evolution.
To understand the process.
And, almost without noticing, to open ourselves up to new paths.
As Joseph Campbell put it: “We must be willing to let go of the life we planned so as to have the life that is waiting for us”.
