Mindset is a word that has been gaining more and more ground nowadays, especially in the corporate world. In fact, you have most likely heard the term slotted into sentences such as: “so-and-so needs to update their mindset” or “the client is going through a mindset transformation”.

But what exactly does it mean?

Mindset is nothing more than our way of thinking or reflecting on a given subject. That is why we talk so much about updating or transforming our mindset in the job market, where this need to “think differently” is increasingly becoming almost a requirement for success.

We can therefore say that a mindset is a kind of “mental model” for how we think, how we behave and even how we react to certain information and situations.

According to psychology, there are two types of mindset: the growth mindset and the fixed mindset. Shall we look at their main characteristics?

• Fixed mindset

People with a fixed mindset, as the name suggests, tend to think in a more limited way: they believe their gifts, flaws and qualities were born with them and will remain that way until the end.

People with a fixed mindset generally don't enjoy learning new things or bringing about major changes. They are more traditional people who rarely allow themselves to think differently.

• Growth mindset

A growth mindset, on the other hand, is the exact opposite of a fixed one. People who think this way are very positive and tend to believe that, with effort, dedication, willpower and learning, it is possible to get anywhere.

They are also individuals who accept mistakes, are willing to learn from them and are always ready to develop new abilities. They believe in – and pursue – the improvement of their skills and competences in every area of life, from the personal to the professional.
